The 16th Edition of the Arctic Futures Symposium Welcomes Variety of Participants and Sees Two Laureates Announced
This year's Arctic Futures Symposium, which took place at EFTA House on December 2nd and 3rd, was by and large a great success in terms of the variety of speakers and participants as well as content of the panel discussions.
Discussions focused on the Kingdom of Denmark's Arctic Council Chairship, how cultural activites can be a boon for local economies in the High North, the energy transition in Arctic communities, resource management by the people of the Arctic, and monitoring of Arctic lacustrine ecosystems.
The outcome of the first day-long scenarios workshop with students organised by Nord University was presented during the sympsoium, allowing key stakehodlers to comment on the results.
The winner of the 4th Laurence Trân Arctic Futures Award, Marine Spark X from Tromsø, Norway, was recognised for their work creating a commercial business by harvesting sea urchins, which destroy ecosystem-important kelp forets in the sea, and use them for create comemrcial fish feed.
The winner of the Mohn Prize for Excellence in Arctic Science, John P. Smol of Queen's Univeristy in Caanda, was announced during the final panel of the sympsoium.
